Spartanburg Christian Academy utility player Hunter Gneisig recently signed to play baseball at USC Salkehatchie at a ceremony at his school.
The SCISA Region I-2A Player of the Year is the first player from SCA to sign a college baseball scholarship. The North-South all-star batted .449 with six doubles, 18 RBIs and 14 runs scored. He also posted a 2.21 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched. He will play infield and pitch in college.
Gneisig, who plans to major either in sports management or kinesiology, said he’s excited about where he’ll be for the next two years.
“Their coach (Bubba Dorman) knows what he’s talking about and is a good coach,” he said. “I just want to be around him.”
Gneisig added he believes that Dorman will help him continue his playing career after his two years at USC Salkehatchie are over.
“I want to go play at a bigger school,” Gneisig said. “He knows a lot of people and can help me.”
Gneisig said being the first player from SCA to sign to play college baseball is an honor.
“It’s amazing, and I feel really blessed,” he said. “I’m excited and ready to go. I think I’ll play as well as (the other incoming freshmen) do. We’re all on the same level in college.”
