Basketball Season Begins

DSC_0661The 2015-2016 USC Salkehatchie Indians are
looking to build on last year’s success. The
Indians were 18-14 last year. During the 2014-
2015 campaign the team was Region X Regular
Season Runner-up and Region X Tournament
Runner-up. The team had two first team AllRegion
selections: Carlos Rankins and Nygel
Gates. Coach Hendren was also voted Region X
Coach of the Year.
Off the 2014-15 squad 5 sophomores signed to
play basketball and continue their education at a
4 year institution. Those players include: Carlos
Rankins (Winston Salem State), Scott Hollins
(University of Northern Ohio), Terrance Jenkins
(West Virginia State), Lee Vanderhorst (St.
Andrews University), and Torrance Outing
(Greensboro College). Coach Hendren says, “To
see those guys have the opportunity to continue
their education while playing basketball is what
our program is about. We are a player’s first
program and to see our guys succeed is what
drives the coaching staff!”

This year’s team returns 8 players from the 2014-
15 roster. With the returners, the Indians add 3
transfers and 6 true freshmen to the 2015-16
roster. “I am very excited to see how our new
additions mesh with our returners this season,”
says Coach Hendren.
The Indians will host 15 home games this year
and will travel for 15 games on the road. “We face
a very challenging schedule this season. Our hope
is that it will test us early and in return prepare us
to be playing our best basketball in March,” says
Coach Hendren.
The coaching staff is really excited about this
group. Coach Hendren says, “We have a talented
group this year. I think our team carries a lot of
depth at each position. If we continue to work
hard and consistently improve we will have a
very good season!”
On Region X play Coach Hendren says, “Our
Region will be very tough again this year. Every
game will be a battle and we are looking forward
to the challenge.”
