The University of South Carolina–Salkehatchie Campus held open tryouts this past Saturday for the upcoming 2016-17 season.
Salk will be fielding a volleyball team for the first time in recent history, and will compete within Region X in the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Coach Amanda Jones, who has been hitting the recruiting trail hard over the last few months, hopes to fill approximately 25 available spots on the roster.
Jones was pleased with the turnout on Saturday. “We had 15 recruits show up on Saturday,” said Jones. “Most of the girls were from surrounding areas USC Salk line 4-28-16.jpgincluding Colleton, Branchville, Dorchester and Columbia. We also had a few out-of-state recruits in attendance from Atlanta, Augusta and North Carolina.”
The tryouts were open, meaning Jones was able to see many recruits with a range of graduation years. “There were six potential 2016s and the rest ranged from 2017-19 graduation years,” said Jones. “Anyone interested in Salk volleyball was able to attend, allowing me to see talent which I had previously not seen. Needless to say, I was excited about what I saw in a few of the recruits. Most of the girls that were 2016 potential are looking to make a decision within the next week or two.”
Salk will begin practice late summer in preparation for the upcoming fall season.
Jones will also host a youth camp this summer for ages 10-13 on June 1-3 from 9 a.m.–noon and for ages 14-18 on June 8-10 from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. For more information, contact Coach Jones at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 843-549-6314, ext. 319.
