Learning History

The USC Salkehatchie Men’s Basketball Team spent time learning about the history of Colleton County by participating in the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society’s (CCHAPS) Amazing Race.  The race was modeled after the TV show “The Amazing Race.”  Each participant raced to pit stops and completed an activity related to the history of South Carolina.  The first task highlighted historic properties owned by CCHAPS.  Participants had to complete puzzles of the Bedon-Lucas House, the Little Library, or Pon Pon Chapel of Ease.  In the second activity, which highlighted the importance of rice in the Lowcountry,  participants had to guess how many grains of rice were in a bowl.  The third task involved finding a shark’s tooth in a pool of sand.  For the final challenge,  participants had to carry a cotton ball on a spoon without dropping it.

“This was a great opportunity to share local history while having a great time,” Dr. Sarah Miller said.  Miller, a professor of history at USC Salkehatchie, serves as an historian for CCHAPS.

CCHAPS plans to host additional races for other Indian athletic teams soon.
