At Salk’s first baseball game of the season yesterday, Parker Neff’s jersey was retired before the first pitch. A sign of the jersey hangs on the press box while a framed picture hangs alongside of Parker’s actual jersey inside the baseball clubhouse.
Parker passed away on March 29, 2019. But a quote included during the jersey’s retirement reminds us that “No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away.” It was decided to retire his jersey so that the sophomores who played with him could share stories about Parker, keeping his ripples “alive and thriving.”
“They can share these stories with those who may not have may not have known Parker personally. Those stories will get passed down from team to team, thus adding to the momentum to Parker’s ripple,” Coach Joye said.
Members of Parker’s family, past and present teammates, special friends and coaches were present. Parker’s mother shared these comments:
“Yesterday the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie Baseball Program retired Parker’s jersey number. His number now hangs for all to see as long as it can. The coach read a beautiful tribute and many teammates from last year came back to give us a hug. Longtime friends of his came and surprised us. His coaches from last year came back as well. Inside the clubhouse they have a special place where they honor Parker everyday. His jersey and picture hang there. It was a hard day but a special day. Thank you Coach Jeremy for all your support and kindness. We miss you so much Parker #13.”
