Final Sept 14
USC Salkehatchie first began basketball as a club sport in 1987 with head coach Joe Williams. In 1988, Rick Walrond was hired as head coach and basketball became an NJCAA intercollegiate sport Coach Walrond coached the program until 1996. The program was discontinued from 1996 until its return in 2007 with Coach Travis Garrett as head coach.
Coach Garrett led the team to Region X and District X runner up positions in both 2012 and 2013 and a regular season championship in 2008. In 2013, the Indians qualified for the NJCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in Hutchinson, Kansas and made the first trip ever for a USC Salkehatchie athletic team to a national championship tournament.
In addition to numerous players making all-region teams, Brandon Riley was the Region X player of the year in 2010 and was also named to the NJCAA All-American team that same year. In 2009, USC Salk basketball player, Bryant Julious was named male athlete of the year for the campus. See the “Where Are They Now” link on this page for a list of USC Salkehatchie basketball players who have gone on to play at four year colleges after their two years at USC Salkehatchie.
