Chandler was a catcher at USC Salkehatchie who received the Best Defense Award while here. He was part of the team who helped coach Jess Dannelly plant the grass for the field where USC Salkehatchie currently plays ball.
He played two years at USC Salkehatchie and then transferred to Coastal Carolina. At that time Coastal was an NAIA school and finished their season Ken’s senior year 6th in the nation moving on to the national playoffs. Ken was selected all- conference and all-region that year. Between his junior and senior years at Coastal, Ken played in Winchester, Virginia in the Valley League with his team winning the Valley League Champion-ship that summer.
At the end of this senior year at Coastal, Ken signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Twins and played for that organization’s A ball team in Rapids, Wisconsin for two years. He re-turned in 1982 to Coastal where he completed his bachelor’s degree in physical education.
