WALTERBORO, S.C. – Versatile wing Jaiden Cancela from Virginia Beach, Virginia, has signed a letter of intent to play for USC Salkehatchie for the upcoming 2023 - 24 season.
Cancela, a 6-foot, 5-inch, 190-pound wing, played for Coach Bobby Steinburg at Catholic High School. Under Coach Steinburg, Catholic went 34-6 and was one of the best high school programs in the state of Virginia. Jaiden averaged 6.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
"Coach Steinburg and I go way back. We first met when I was coaching at Youngstown State, and he was at rival Kent State up in Ohio. When I took this job, we spoke early and often, and I leaned on him for some of his junior college experience and perspective. That is how I initially discovered Jaiden," Lynch said. "I needed to watch him play a few times before I started to understand the value he brings to a team. He plays with so much effort and heart, and that's going to be his calling card here at Salk. So much of what Jaiden does has nothing to do with statistics and everything to do with winning!"
Coach Steinburg was awarded Coach of the Year after leading his club to a regular season championship. The Catholic Crusaders won a record-setting 30 games in a row on their way to a historic 34-win season.
"Jaiden has a high ceiling offensively and can score on all 3 levels. His incredible work ethic and high motor was an integral part of our 34-win record-setting season," Steinburg said. "Jaiden is a high-character young man who places as much importance on academics as he does basketball."
Jaiden plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy and currently has a 3.4 GPA.
