WALTERBORO, S.C. – USC Salkehatchie Head Coach Matt Lynch announced the addition of CJ McPherson to its basketball progam Tuesday, inking the transfer from Millersville University (D2) to a National Letter of Intent. McPherson, a 6-foot, 4-inch, 205-pound guard, was teammates with Salkehatchie's Jaiden Cancela at Catholic High School in Virginia Beach.
While at Catholic High School, McPherson was named 1st Team All State, 1st Team All Conference and averaged 16 points and 5 rebounds. He also shot the ball extremely well from behind the arc at 46% from 3. He lead Catholic in scoring his senior year as well as a school record of 34 wins that included a 30 game winning streak.
"Last season we played our best basketball in March, and that is a credit to the guys in the locker room and the culture they created. We've have been looking the for ways to add to that culture, and CJ is going to bring a ton of value to the program," Coach Lynch said. "I watched CJ play his senior year in high school as I was recruiting Jaiden. His ability to put the ball in the basket is what would catch your eye immediately, but his character and work ethic is why I recruited him so hard. He's going to help us take that next step as a program."
"What impresses me most about CJ is his ability to score the ball under intense pressure. There is no moment too big for him," said Catholic High School Head Coach Bobby Steinburg. Coach Steinburg was awarded Coach of the Year after leading his club to a regular season championship in the 2022-2023 season.
With McPherson's signing, he becomes the newest roster member for the 2024-25 season. He joins the freshmen trio of Jeremaih McCain (Columbia, S.C.), Devan Rush (Atlanta, G.A.), and DeMarco Middleton (Augusta, G.A.).
