The Salkehatchie Volleyball squad earned their 2nd conference win of the week in an exciting 5-set victory tonight over rival USC Sumter.
After losing the first two sets 19-25 and 16-25, Salkehatchie knew they had to fight for every point to regain control over the match.
"We knew they weren't going to just lay down and give us the game," said Coach Aquino. "In the third set, we focused on anticipating their offense while regaining control of the ball on our side of the net."
The Salkehatchie ladies did just that, battling point for point and winning the third set 25-23.
"We came out slow in the first two, but pulled ourselves together to reverse sweep the fire ants. They didn’t see it coming," captain Serah Rego said.
Salkehatchie hit their stride in the fourth set, playing aggressively and earning themselves a landslide 25-11 win.
"Our cohesion tonight was unbeatable. I couldn’t be prouder of our team,” said Captain Sydney Kashner.
Coach Aquino added, "Our energy was up, we shrugged off mistakes, and owned every moment."
Going into the fifth set, Sumter won the coin flip, giving them the serve. "In the pre-set huddle, I made it clear that our goal was to be the first to 8, get us back on our home side of the court, and win the match."
The Salkehatchie squad did just that, playing purely in-system volleyball and capitalizing on Sumter's mistakes, winning the set 15-8 and earning their second conference win of the week.
“The way we work together is incredible. We are a unit and it shows. There is nothing like the energy in the Salk Palace,” captain Connelly Smith said.
Salkehatchie will take on another conference opponent this Friday night when they play against USC Union at home.
