WALTERBORO, S.C. The USC Salkehatchie volleyball squad earned a massive win tonight against Columbia International University's JV team in 5 nail-biting sets.
Winning the first set 25-17, Salkehatchie went into the second set too confident, giving up a 6-point run to a clever CIU libero server, losing that set 19-25. They came back and fought, with the Salkehatchie defense on fire, earning a third set victory 27-25. Falling in the fourth set 13-25, the Salkehatchie women knew they had to pull out all the stops to defeat them in the fifth and final set.
"As with any fifth set, the goal is to be the first to 8 points, so we can switch sides and dominate to finish the match," Coach Dani Aquino said.
The Salkehatchie squad did just that, fighting point for point, finishing the set 15-13, and ending the match victorious.
"The rallies were insane," Aquino said. "We never gave up, never let a ball drop, and kept them guessing the entire time."
As a team, Salk Volleyball earned 116 defensive digs with only 7 errors, 98 serve receive passes and only 11 receive errors, and 194 offensive attacks ending in 60 kills.
USC Salkehatchie takes on Denmark Tech next Tuesday for their Pink Out match at home at 6 p.m.
